Discussion Protocols
We are working on having polite discussion among students. You can help us by encouraging:
- your children to say excuse me before interrupting a conversation
- one person speaking at a time in family discussions
- respectful disagreement because we do all have different opinions
- the use of rich vocabulary
Expeditionary Learning Focus:
We are continuing our section on FOSSILS in our reading program. The students will be exploring fossils, paleontology, discovery, exploration and everything that goes along with the topic. We will be learning a lot of new vocabulary and we will begin to learn about how to respond to multiple choice test questions and short response questions. We will also begin to update reading levels by doing running record assessments as student show that they are ready to "level up". Please keep up the reading practice at home! Practice is the number one way to increase reading levels and to build stamina. By now, second graders should be able to read for at least 30 minutes without interruption.
We will be writing narratives which are stories about things that have happened in their lives. We will also put ourselves "in the shoes" of a paleontologist to write as we believe they would write. Spacing, penmanship, capitalization and punctuation are very important to making our writing easy to read. We may be sending home penmanship activities for the students who seem to need extra practice.
Behaviors
As we are in the winter months, behaviors always need to be monitored closely. You can help us by:
- making sure that your child know your expectations for good behaviors in school
- staying connected on Class DoJo for daily updates on how many points your child earns each day
- 5 points is a perfect PANDA day
- 4 points is an excellent BLUE day
- 3 points is a good GREEN day
- NO POINTS ARE GIVEN FOR YELLOW, ORANGE OR RED...if this happens ask your child why or reach out and ask the teacher.
- making sure your children arrive on time and come every day....routines tend to lead to best behavior choices
AS ALWAYS...WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
BELONGINGS
PLEASE maker sure all jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts are labeled with your child's name. Children constantly misplace these items and a name on the inside tag makes it much easier to be sure it gets back to it's owner.
Math
We are finishing up with addition and subtraction using the standard algorithm which is the way we learned math, complete with carrying over and borrowing. We move a little slower at first to be sure that they understand the moves behind the math. Next we will continue to work on place value concepts. You can help us by:
- setting aside time to practice math each day
- math homework should be attempted alone
- 211 can not get help with happy numbers but any worksheets can be corrected by family
- if you notice something that your child struggles with, please reach out to the teacher
SWIMMING
Class 2-317 has their first swimming session on Monday the 9th. Parents are welcome to join the class each Monday. Contact the teachers through Class DoJo.
